Mars Scenery
Olympus Mons Scenery
Filename: olympus-mons.zip Author:
Robert Stettner (Foxtrot) Type: Scenery Size: 899kb
File Description: The Olympus Mons, located on
the planet Mars, is by far the tallest volcano in the solar system, rising higher than three Mount Everests and spanning the width of the entire Hawaiian island chain. It is the largest of the major Tharsis
volcanoes, rising 25 km (15.5 miles) and stretching over nearly 550 km (340 miles) east-west.
Valles Marineris Scenery
Filename: valles-marineris.zip Author:
Robert Stettner (Foxtrot) Type: Scenery Size: 1557kb
File Description: The Valles Marineris is a
system of canyons located just south of the Martian equator. The system is about 4000 km long, and, if on earth, would extend all the way across the United States. The central individual troughs, generally 50 to 100
km wide, merge into a depression as much as 600 km wide. In places the canyon floor reaches a depth of 10 km, 6 to 7 times deeper than the Grand Canyon.
Isidis Highlands Scenery
Filename: isidis-highlands.zip Author:
Robert Stettner (Foxtrot) Type: Scenery Size: 314kb
File Description: The Isidis Highlands on
Mars, where the Isidis Planitia meets the Libya Montes is a highly considered landing site for the 2003 Mars Express Rover mission. It is Ancient fluvial environment as well as a highlands-lowlands boundary, perfect
for a scientific or even scenic visit.
Review: These scenery files are all you would
expect. Adding 3D terrain to the default flat planetary surface is another step toward realism. Of course I'll take as many of these as I can get. Decending down to a surface base now is blessed with
mountains, hills and valleys. The only drawback is the Band-Aid effect. Since the whole planet isn't terra formed each add-on scene is patch over the default surface. This is more apparent with Mars then with the Moon add-ons. This is something I am more then willing to overlook.
Tip!
Olympus Mons will mysteriously disappear from view when only 20km away. Trevor Johns gives us this tip:
Edit the CFG file for each Martian base, and under the SIZE= line just add an
OBJECTSIZE=
(this basically sets how big a "standard" object at the base is...if an object would appear <1 pixel wide from the current distance the whole base is not drawn...the Orbiter
default is 100m if not specified)
For example, change the top of the OLYMPUS.CFG file to look like this:
; === Surface Base === Name = Olympus Size = 5000 ObjectSize = 5000 ...etc
You will now find the textures are visible at extended distances now...
